Yovich stars in crushing win

Northern Knights all-rounder Joseph Yovich hit an unbeaten 128 and then took three wickets to help his team to a crushing 10 wicket win over the Otago Volts at University Oval in Dunedin.

Otago started the day on 139 for one and managed to take their total through to 334.  This left Northern needing 13 to win with the runs polished off quickly by opener Michael Parlane.

Craig Cumming did his best to keep his team in the game with a battling 126 but when he was dismissed the game was gone.

Yovich backed up his first innings batting heroics with three for 29 with the ball to set up the victory with a day to spare.

Young spinners Kane Williamson and Anton Devcich both contributed two wickets apiece.

The Northern Knights finish with a maximum eight points.

Day 2: Otago Volts 165 trail  Northern Knights by 157

The Northern Knights added 215 runs to their overnight score to finish their first innings with a 322 run lead in the match against the Otago Volts at University Oval in Dunedin.

All rounder Joseph Yovich was the star for the Knights hitting an unbeaten 128.  It’s the tall left hander’s third First-Class century and first against Otago.

Yovich was well supported by lower order batsmen Graeme Aldridge (52) and Bradley Scott (65) with the Northern Knights making 410.

Left arm spinner Nick Beard was impressive for the Volts taking three for 59 off 28.5 overs, including 7 maidens.

Otago have made a solid start to their second inning, putting on 139 for the first wicket with Leighton Morgan making 51 and Craig Cumming still at the crease on 91.

Otago will resume tomorrow on 165 for one – 157 behind Northern’s first innings total.

Day 1: Northern Knights 195 for six lead Otago Volts by 107

Northern Knights strike bowler Brent Arnel ripped through the Otago Volts line up, taking six for 18 on day one of the Plunket Shield match at University Oval in Dunedin.

It was a career best haul for Arnel and third five wicket bag.

Craig Cumming hit 42 at the top of the order with the next best being 12 as the home team was rolled for 88 in 30 overs.

Northern are 195 for six in reply with veteran Michael Parlane making 51 and all rounder Joseph Yovich hitting an unbeaten on 47.  Yovich will resume tomorrow with Anton Devcich (9).
