Wizards finish last after loss to Firebirds

The Wellington Firebirds avoided the wooden spoon in the HRV Cup following a seven run win over the Canterbury Wizards at Rangiora that leaves the hosts languishing in last place.

Wellington put on 162 after being put into bat and then turned the screws on their opponents, keeping them to 155 for seven.

Cameron Merchant led the way with 57 off 44 with opening partner Neal Parlane next best with 35 from 26.

Owais Shah (25 off 19) and James Franklin (26 off 19) continued on with the Firebirds losing just five wickets.

The Wizards made a reasonable start, putting on 24 for the first wicket but the loss of Nicol sparked a collapse that saw them crumble to 54 for five.

Johannes Myburgh and Dean Brownlie combined to put on 75 for the sixth wicket and push the home team close.

The loss of Myburgh for 40 put pressure on the lower order and they failed to deliver.  McMillian was left unbeaten on 45 off 33.

Dewayne Bowden claimed two for 23 off two overs with Jeetan Patel economical with one for 15.
