West Indies grasp last-ball victory over White Ferns

The West Indies squeezed out a last ball win over the White Ferns in the ICC World Twenty20 warm up match to win by three wickets at St Mary's Park in St Kitts.

Deandra Dottin laid the foundation with a blistering 31 off 17 with tail enders Pamela Lavine (17*) and Merissa Aguilleira (11*) sharing an unbeaten 19 run partnership for the eighth wicket as the hosts chased down the White Ferns total of 153 for seven.

Aimee Watkins was the pick of the White Ferns bowlers with three for 23 while Nicola Browne chipped in with one for 22.

Earlier, White Ferns batsmen Watkins (56 off 48), Rachel Priest (11 off 19) and Browne (30 off 17) retired out to give other players some time the middle ahead of the first match against India on 6 May.

Speaking after the match Watkins said she was pleased with their progress and used the warm up matches to acclimatise and get the players match fit.

“We retired three of our batsmen and all our batsmen have now had some time to observe the conditions.

“Our middle order batted well today after a slow start so it is a matter of constructing the innings the best we can to maximise our good batting power.”

“We have tried to give most people some sort of opportunity over the last two days and there is healthy competition for places,” she added.

The bowling attack was guilty of delivering ten wides and three no-balls and Watkins knows that this is an area they need to concentrate on.

When asked what the team had taken from the loss Watkins replied, “That we need to execute our basic skills more consistently and that the game is never over - one big over can change the momentum so quickly.”

The victory follows the West Indies recent three match clean sweep of Sri Lanka to go with their win over the world champion England team late last year.

“The West Indies are genuine contenders - they bowl and field with accuracy and hit the ball very hard and very big,” Watkins concluded.
