Wellington claimed a rare victory in the Under-18 tournament by beating Canterbury by 26 runs in their Twenty20 match in Lincoln today.
Batting first, Wellington put on a decent 162 and managed to hold down a meagre attempt of a chase by Canterbury to have them all out for just 136.
The boys from the capital won the toss and opted to bat. It turned out to be a good decision as opener Brett Johnson took to the home sides bowling line up. He went on to top score for his side with 64, an innings which included seven fours and two sixes.
He was assisted with starts from players throughout the line up to give the Wellington side a very respectable 162 all out with one ball remaining.
Sam Chamberlain again did most of the damage for Canterbury as he picked up three for 32 off 3.5 overs.
In reply it was hard to describe Canterbury’s run chase other than terrible. Chamberlain again delivered for his team with a top score of 34, but the rest only made small starts, if that.
There was a wag from the tail at the end to make the score line more respectable, but it was a below-par performance from Canterbury who eventually finished 136 all out in the final over.
It was a great win for a struggling Wellington and an embarrassing lost for Canterbury.
