Volts snatch two wicket thriller

The Otago Volts have finished their Men’s One-Day campaign with a thrilling two wicket win over the Central Stags at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth.

The victory isn’t enough to see the Volts lift themselves from fifth place with the Stags finishing in fourth and going through to play the Canterbury Wizards in the preliminary final on Saturday.

In reply to Central’s 253 for nine, Otago reached the target with two wickets in hand and two balls to spare.

The run chase led by Darren Broom who crafted a brilliant 73 off 104 deliveries, including five boundaries and two sixes.

Losing five wickets for 42 runs threatened to rail road innings but some late hitting by Greg Todd (39 off 36) and number nine batsmen Anthony Bullick (33 from 20) guided the visitors home in a nervous finish.

Earlier, the Stag’s batsmen found it difficult to withstand a fiery spell of four for 60 from Bullick.  It is his best One-Day haul beating his previous best of three for 49.  He was well supported by Nathan McCullum who took two for 32.

Stags batsmen Bevin Griggs (51) and Brendon Diamanti (56) scored half centuries with Mathew Sinclair chipping in with 42.
