Volts finish on a high

Otago Volts 223 all out after 48.3 overs (Jesse Ryder 96, Michael Bracewell 39, Tarun Nethula 4-35) beat the Devon Hotel Central Stags 127 all out after 29.3 overs (Kruger van Wyk 34, Ian Butler 4-28) by 106 runs

The Otago Volts have capped off their Ford Trophy season on a high, beating the Devon Hotel Central stags by 106 runs at University Oval in Dunedin.

The Volts posted 223 in their first-innings behind a scintillating 96 from 67 balls from Jesse Ryder. They then dismissed the Stags for 127 after 29.3 overs, lifting them off the bottom of the points table.

Two wickets in the first two overs put the Volts in a precarious position early on, but cameos from Michael Bracewell (39) and Derek de Boorder (27) steadied the ship for the home side.

The introduction Ryder brought fireworks almost immediately, racing to 50 from just 39 balls. His destructive display continued, but he was losing partners at the other end, before he himself departed four runs short of his century.

Tarun Nethula was the best of the Stags bowlers, taking figures of four for 35 from 10 overs.

Wickets fell in clumps in the Stags reply though, with three wickets falling in the opening powerplay.

Kruger van Wyk, as he’s done all season, put up resistance for the Stags in the middle-order with a determined 34, but it wasn’t enough to threaten the Volts total.

A late wag in the ticket elevated the Stags past 100, but their season ended in the 30th over, Ian Butler picking up the final wicket to finish with four for 28 from 7.3 overs.
