Vettori helps Knights rout Wizards

Daniel Vettori starred with the bat and the ball for the Northern Knights hitting 49 and taking three for 31 against the Canterbury Wizards at Seddon Park, Hamilton.

Tillerkaratne Dilshan got the Northern innings off to a flyer with a brisk 28 from 17, including an impressive “dil-scoop” for six.  The Sri Lankan international invented the unconventional shot that involves getting down on one knee and scooping the ball back over the wicketkeepers head.

Vettori came in at three and assumed an anchor role, albeit at more than a run a ball.  He put on a swift 51 for the fourth wicket with Anton Devcich who contributed 35 off 17 balls including four huge sixes.

A bit of late hitting from the middle order took the total through to a formidable 184 for seven.

In reply, the Wizards slumped to 113 all out to hand the Knights a comfortable 71 run win.

Rob Nicol hit 31 at the top of the order but a disastrous collapse saw Canterbury loss a string of wickets with the last man falling after only 15.4 overs.

Bradley Scott was the pick of the Knights attack taking three for 11, including two maidens.

The win keeps the Knights in the hunt for a finals berth as are on equal points with the third placed Auckland Aces but just behind on net run rate.
