Stags Retain HRV Cup Top Spot

There was a certain inevitability about today's match-up between the table-topping Central Stags and cellar-dwellers, Canterbury Wizards in Nelson today.

Sent in to bat by the supremely confident Stags, the Wizards could only muster 135 off their 20 overs in a faltering display at Nelson's new Saxton Oval venue. Captain Peter Fulton led the way for the Wizards with an unbeaten 41 off 35 balls. Craig McMillan's belligerent 38 off just 26 balls (including three 6's) was just a cameo in an innings that never gathered real momentum for Canterbury or threatened to extend the powerful Stags batting line-up.

HRV Cup debutant, Seth Rance, dominated with the ball for the Stags, claiming four wickets fo just 13 runs in his four overs. At once stage he was sitting on a hat-trick ball.

The Stags made short work of the run chase, with Peter Ingram comntinuing his fine form with 77 off 69 balls. Mathew Sinclair provided invaluable support with 40 off 32 as the Stags cruised to victory.

The win kept the Central Stags firmly atop the HRV Cup points table and sets up a crucial clash with the Auckland Aces in Nelson on Sunday.
