The Australian Shooting Stars have claimed a six wicket victory over the New Zealand Women Emerging Players in the first One-Day match at Blacktown Olympic Park in Sydney, Australia.
Having been put in to bat first, the Emerging Players were dismissed for 90 after 33.5 overs. The home side lost four wickets in their pursuit, but reached the target with 29.1 overs in hand.
It was wicketkeeper Beth Mooney who anchored the Shooting Stars innings, seeing her side home with an unbeaten 24. Captain Nicole Bolton was the other main contributor with the opener hitting four boundaries in her 24 from 29 deliveries.
The Emerging Players were unable to strike with the consistency required, but were buoyed by three wickets from Morna Nielsen. The left-arm orthodox bowler returned figures of three for 27 from nine overs.
Earlier the Emerging Players had suffered a dramatic collapse having been cruising at 70 for three. Opener Meg Kendal made 20 before being trapped leg-before-wicket by Gemma Triscari, while captain Maddy Green was solid on her way to a game high 35.
With exception to Kendal, Green couldn’t form a substantial partnership though and watched as her side were reduced to 78 for five. Two runs later she too departed, as the Shooting Stars capitalised on their momentum and ran through the lower-order.
Jemma Barsby was the chief wicket-taker and finished with the strong statistics of five for 12 off 7.5 overs.
The second match takes place at the same venue on Friday.
