Rain mars round seven of the State Twenty20

The State Otago Volts and State Auckland Aces appear home and hosed as finalists with a round remaining in the domestic State Twenty20 cricket championship.

Rain washed out all three seventh round matches, leaving only the third-placed State Canterbury Wizards with an outside chance of overhauling either of the leading two teams to contest the final on March 1.

The only hope for Canterbury -- who are one win behind the leaders and boast an inferior net run rate -- is to secure a significant win over the State Central Stags in Palmerston North on Sunday. They must also hope Auckland are well beaten by Otago when those teams square off in Auckland.

Canterbury's crucial match against Auckland scheduled for Christchurch today was the last match abandoned, with the hosts desperately hoping a shortened game could be arranged.

However, the umpires lifted the bails at 6.30pm.

Earlier, games between the Wellington Firebirds and the Central Stags in the capital and the Northern Knights and the Otago Volts at Mt Maunganui were ruined by rain that fell across the country.
