New Zealand A had to settle for a draw after getting agonisingly close to a win over the Australian Institute of Sport in the three-day match of the Emerging Players Tournament at Peter Burge Oval in Brisbane.
Chasing 352 to win, New Zealand made 343 for seven before played was stopped.
BJ Watling and Brad Wilson made a solid start to the run chase with an 81 run opening stand before Wilson fell on 21.
Watling anchored the innings scoring a fine 139 and had support from Daniel Flynn (38) and Dean Brownlie (41).
With an eye on victory Luke Woodcock smashed 52 off 32 balls towards the end but was stopped by Australia’s best bowler Sean Abbott who finished with figures of three for 54.
Derek de Boorder and Todd Astle were both unbeaten on 14 with just 10 runs required to win.
Earlier, AIS started the day on 180 for three and took their score through to 388 for eight declared. Alex Keath took his overnight score from 34 to 104 with useful contributions also coming from Maxwell who hit 90 and Beaton who made 79.
Spinner Todd Astle picked up late wickets to finish with three for 64 while fast bowler Trent Boult collected two for 64.
New Zealand A now take on India in the second round of three day matches starting on Saturday at Endeavour Park in Townsville.
Day 2 – New Zealand A v AIS
A massive Neil Broom century had taken New Zealand A to a first innings lead against the Australian Institute of Sport at Peter Burge Oval in Brisbane.
New Zealand A piled on 340 eight before declaring ahead of tea on day two and then picked up three wickets to have AIS at 180 for three at the close of play. Earlier, AIS made 304 for five in their first innings.
The bulk of New Zealand’s runs came from Broom who hit an incredible 22 boundaries and ten sixes on his way to 197 off 187 balls.
Doug Bracewell, who consistently chipped in with the bat during the limited overs section, again made a useful contribution. His 52 was the second highest score with opener Brad Wilson’s 39 the only other score of note.
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc was the best of the AIS attack with three for 26 while leg spinner Nathan Brain took three for 83.
Glenn Maxwell (74*) and Alex Keith (34*) will resume on the third and final day for AIS.
Day 2 – New Zealand A v Australia Institute of Sport
The Australian Institute of Sport XI are in a commanding position at the end of day one of the three-day match against New Zealand A at Peter Burge Oval in Brisbane.
AIS, who won the toss and elected to bat, compiled 304 for five before declaring late in the day with New Zealand losing BJ Watling to finish on 13 for one.
The bulk of the runs came via a 133 run partnership for the third wicket between Alex Keath (73) and Tim Armstrong (112). Tom Beaton cut loose late in the innings with an unbeaten 38 ball half century.
Andy McKay took two for 36 while fellow fast bowler Doug Bracewell picked up two for 37. Spinner Luke Woodcock was the other wicket taker returning up one for 36.
Brad Wilson (6*) and Daniel Flynn (5*) will resume tomorrow.
