Northern U-19s crush Auckland opponents

The Northern Districts Under-19 team avenged their first innings lost to Auckland in their recent two-day match with a whopping 127 run win in their One Day fixture at Weymouth Oval, Manurewa.

Behind a sensational century from Tim Seifert, Northern posted an imposing 328 for five in the first innings. Auckland in reply was unable to keep up with the required run-rate and were restricted to 201 for nine.

The top-order left a lot of work to do for the rest of the line-up with Auckland reduced to 43 for five after 13.5 overs.

It looked like a truly colossal win could be on the cards, but some late resistance ensured that no record book loss was on the way.

Chris Dunn was the first to start the mini revival, top scoring with 57 from 71 balls. His dismissal in the 31st over could have spelt the end of the innings, but cameos from Brett Randell (30) and Blair Smith (23*) took their side past 200 to give the score-line a little respectability.

To Northern’s credit they bowled well, with six of their seven bowlers amongst the wickets, while they also benefitted from two run-outs.

Earlier, Tim Seifert had taken full advantage of the great platform his top-order had supplied to smash a scintillating 109 not out off just 60 balls.

Coming in a number six, Seifert crunched 14 fours and five sixes in his boundary laden innings. It was quite a spectacle, bringing up his ton from 57 balls.

While his fireworks may have stolen the show, Thomas MacRury (69) and Cameron Gibbons (38 also deserve a mention having got their side off to a solid start.

Alongside a number of other contributors Northern surpassed the 300 mark with some ease, effectively setting up a comfortable victory.
