Northern Knights win by 19 runs

The Northern Knights have beaten the Otago Volts by 19 runs in a rain affected match at Queen’s Park in Invercargill.

Played didn’t start until 3:30pm and was reduced to 30 overs per innings.

Openers Watling and Devcich got Northern off to a rollicking start after being put into bat, both hitting half centuries and sharing a 78 run partnership inside ten overs.

Devcich was particularly ruthless, hitting 52 off 35 with Watling a more measured 58 from 65.

Wicketkeeper batsman Peter McGlashan kept the momentum going with a brisk 53 off 40 with Joseph Yovich hitting 21 not out at the end to propel Northern through to 224 off their 30 overs.

Otago pace bowler Neil Wagner was took three for 46 off six overs with Andy Bullick chipping in two for 34 off five.  Warren McSkimming and Ian Butler were taken apart, going for 25 off two overs and 26 of three overs respectively.

In reply, Otago got off to a decent start with Hamish Rutherford blasting 30 at the top of the order and Neil Broom making 58 from number three.

Captain Craig Cumming made a quick fire 28 but his dismissal sparked a collapse that saw them crumble to 127 for six.

Some late hitting from Yasir Arafat (31 from 14) lifted the score to 205.

The win puts Northern into second spot on equal points with leaders Canterbury.  Otago are back in fourth place on 4.
