Northern hold off Wellington

Northern Districts have continued to impress at the Women’s U-21 tournament in Lincoln, beating Wellington by 27 runs.

Batting first, Northern finished with a par score of 130, but an accurate bowling performance proved to be too much for Wellington, eventual victors by 27 runs.

Having won the toss, Northern found themselves struggling at six for two thanks to two quick wickets from Deanna Doughty. Things settled down for the batting side though with Jacinta Coleman (34) and Heidi Arndt (41) putting on 86 for the third wicket.

Captain Rhiana Vincent came out and hit a quick-fire 14 to take Northern to 130 for five at the end of their 20 overs.

In reply Wellington lost the crucial wicket of Captain Rachel Chin early, but recovered through the efforts of Maddy Chapman (14) and Deanna Doughty (32).

However when both established batsmen were dismissed the economy rate took a hit for Wellington and regular wickets started to fall frequently making them fall further and further behind.

In the end Wellington were well off the chase, falling 28 runs short of victory at 103 for seven after 20 overs.

Northern’s tidy bowling display paid off as Brook Kirkbride and Vincent picked up two wickets each and choked the Wellington batsmen for runs.
