Round 5 Review

Weston Primary School 105-2 (M Loe 35, A Petrie 21) lost to Viscount Primary School 106-4 (E Lavea 31, T Taupau 21)

Viscount came into the final round still having a chance of winning the National Primary School Shield. To do this other results would have to go their way and they would have to beat Weston Primary School. Weston batted first and set what was probably a par score. Captain Molly Loe batted well, hitting an unbeaten 35* and had good support from opener Alice Petrie. The pair put on 88 runs for the second wicket. In reply Viscount were positive from the start. Tame Taupau hit a quick 21 before getting run out. Taupau and her other opener had already put their team in a winning position with a 55 run opening partnership. Viscount then make relatively quick work of the target, hitting the winning runs in the sixteenth over.

Heaton Normal Intermediate 166-1 (J Hull 40*, G Edge 30*, L Murray 27) beat Raroa Normal Intermediate School 100-3 (J Catherwood 28)

Heaton knew that anything other than a loss would mean they would be crowned champions. After winning the toss Heaton decided to bat first on the Bert Sutcliffe Oval. A great opening partnership of 68 between Lucy Murray and Joey Hull was the perfect platform for the innings. Hull was then joined by captain Georgia Edge. The pair both ended the innings not out, adding 98 runs to the total during their partnership. Over the tournament Heaton’s top three have been outstanding. The three all finishing within the top four run scorers in the tournament. For Raroa to chase down 166 against a well drilled Heaton side was always going to be tough. Jemma Catherwood showed a lot of fight during her 75 minute stay at the crease. Economic bowling and tight fielding meant runs were hard to come by. Catherwood and her captain, Emma Downey combined for a 63 run partnership for the third wicket. Though, Heaton were always ahead on run rate, in the end winning the match by 66 runs, therefore they would be crowed National Primary School Shield champions.

Tauranga Normal Intermediate 171-5 (E Bettelheim 53*, E Pilbrow 29, N Nicholson 2-48) beat Havelock North Intermediate 148 all out off 19.3 overs (R Roberts 37, A Apperley 34, E Bettelheim 3-40, E Pilbrow 2-17, S Rose 2-33)

In the final match of the tournament, Tauranga still had a chance of winning the tournament if other results had gone their way. Tauranga batted first and set a mammoth 171-5. Captain Emma Bettelheim opened the innings and was unbeaten when the 20 overs were up. She finished with a run a ball 53, while Emily Pilbrow pitched in with a quick fire 29. In reply Havelock North got within 30 runs of their opponents, but it was not to be.  Ruby Roberts and Aniela Apperley both were out in their thirties. Wickets fell to all five of Havelock North’s bowlers, with Bettelheim being the pick of the bowlers with three wickets. Nine of Havelock North’s wickets were their batsman being bowled.

Round Four

Weston Primary School 84-8 (R Cunningham 28, E Bettelheim 3-10, I Hawkins 2-19) lost to Tauranga Intermediate 85-4 off 15.1 overs (E Pilbrow 29, E Bettelheim 21*, M Loe 3-14)

Otago’s Weston Primary were looking to pick up their third win, however Tauranga Intermediate weren’t going to make it easy for them. Weston batted first, and opener River Cunningham set a good platform for her side, hitting 28. Other than the top three batsman for Weston, no one else managed to get more than 2. This was due to some good bowling, especially from captain Emma Bettelheim who picked up figures of 3-10 off her four overs. Tauranga lost an early wicket in their chase but Bettelheim and Emily Pilbrow combined for a match winning partnership. Bettelheim finished not out on 21, while Pilbrow hit a run a ball 29. Weston’s captain Molly Loe was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-14. Weston hit the winning runs during the sixteenth over.

Havelock North 124 all out off 19.2 overs (W Carter 3-10) lost to Raroa Normal Intermediate 124 all out off 18.4 overs, Raroa winning in a bowl off (J Catherwood 59, T Nettlingham 3-37, L Ward 2-14, R Roberts 2-25, N Nicholson 2-27)

Havelock North and Raroa produced one of the ‘firsts’ during the fourth round of the National Primary School Shield. Havelock batted first and bowled out in the final over for 124. Aniela Apperley and Jorja Earley both contributed well to the total. However, the star of the first innings was Raroa bowler Waimarie Carter who produced figures of 3-10. Raroa’s chase did not begin well, both openers fell cheaply. Not for the first time in the tournament Jemma Catherwood came out and batted beautifully. During her 37 balls she hit 11 boundaries, she eventually fell for 59. Raroa were at 3-102 at one point, but due to some good bowling from Tessa Nettlingham (3-37) Havelock North were able to play themselves back into the game. With the scores tied, Raroa were nine wickets down. The pressure ball was bowled by Nettlingham and she managed to sneak a ball past Raroa’s Harriet Mills onto the stumps. This meant a bowl off was needed to decide the winner. Even with all the pressure two Raroa players managed to hit the stumps, which gave Raroa their first win of the tournament.

Heaton Normal Intermediate 158-2 (L Murray 57, G Edge 40*) beat Viscount Primary School 118-4 (K Tomai 39*, T Taupau 22, V Paasi 22)

The last match of the round brought together the two teams at the top of the table. Both Heaton and Viscount had won all three of their opening games, which meant the match was a mini final. Viscount won the toss and sent Heaton into bat. A 48 run opening partnership set the match up well, but it was the partnership during the second wicket that put Heaton in the box seat. Georgia Edge and Lucy Murray combined for a 90 run partnership. Eventually Tame Taupau broke the partnership through bowling Murray. However, the wicket only fell after the damage had been done with Murray ending on 57. Edge finished the innings off, ending unbeaten on 40. This meant Viscount was going to have to produce something special to chase down Heaton’s 158. The innings began positively for Viscount, but three wickets fell in quick succession. Edge then brought herself onto bowl, and she managed to slow down Viscount, only leaking seven runs of her four overs. Kiki Teura hit an unbeaten 39, but Viscount eventually fell 40 runs short.

Round Three

Viscount Primary School 113-3 (E Lavea 38*, T Taupau 23, R Roberts 2-26) beat Havelock North Intermediate 77 all out off 15.4 overs (H Tahana 3-16)

After winning their first two games Viscount came into this game against Havelock North as favourites. Play was delayed for a couple of hours as rain fell intermittently, but once the rain cleared Viscount won the toss and elected to bat. The umpires decided that only four overs of time would be lost, there both teams would bat for 18 overs. Elizabeth Lavea made use of playing on the Bert Sutcliffe Oval. Lavea hit five boundaries in her 38*. Lavea also had good support from opener Tame Taupau. Bowling wise, captain Ruby Roberts picked up two wickets, but the pick of the bowlers was Lucy Ward who was very economical in her three overs. Chasing over one hundred was always going to be a tough task for the Havelock North side and a couple of early run outs made the task even harder. Tessa Nettlingham batted well for her 14 not out. Sadly for Havelock she didn’t get much the support from her team, who was undone by some brilliant bowling. The pick of the bowlers was Heaven Tahana who picked up three wickets for 16 runs.

Tauranga Intermediate 190-4 (E Pilbrow 80, A Palmer 28*) beat Raroa Intermediate 59 all out off 14.1 overs (E Pilbrow 3-10, S Rose 3-11, K Taele 2-11)

Both teams were looking to pick up their first win of the tournament. Rain also effected this match meaning it was reduced to 17 overs per innings. Tauranga battered first and put a huge total on the board. Anahera Palmer batted all the way through the innings finishing 28 not out. However, the real star of the innings was Emily Pilbrow who hit the top score we have seen so far. Pilbrow hit 14 boundaries on her way to 80 before Jemma Catherwood picked up Pilbrow’s wicket. Pilbrow and Palmer combined for a 157-run partnership. Extras also played a role in innings, with Tauranga posting a terrific 190-4. It was going to be something special for Raroa to chase down 191, and their innings never got any momentum. The opening bowlers Emily Pilbrow and Sophia Rose both picked up three wickets, while Kenza Taele grabbed a brace of wickets. Tauranga will be confident ahead of their next match, as they finished 131 runs ahead of their Wellingtonian rivals.

Heaton Normal Intermediate 120-2 (J Hull 38*, G Edge 35) beat Weston Primary School 78-5 (A Petrie 27)

The big clash of the round brought together Heaton Normal and Weston Primary who had both won their first two games. Rain reduced the match to 18 overs. Heaton won the toss and elected to bat first. Joey Hull opened the innings and was still there when Heaton finished their innings 18 over later. Hull ended 38 not out, while Georgia Edge hit a quick fire 35. Edge continued her good work in the field. Weston were looking good at 0-36 before Edge began her work in the field. All five wickets that Weston lost Edge was involved in. This included three run outs from Edge, one catch and one wicket that occurred off Edge’s bowling. Weston ended 42 runs behind their opponents.

Round Two

Raroa Normal Intermediate 84 all out off 18.5 overs (J Catherwood 20*, M Tomai 4-17, T Taupau 2-4) lost to Viscount Primary School 85-6 off 12.2 overs (A Holdaway 3-9, E Downey 2-29)

Viscount came into this game full of confidence after picking up a win in round one. From the outset they put their opponents under the pump. After sending Raroa into bat, opening bowling Tame Taupau put pressure on their Wellington opponents. Jemma Catherwood finished the first round as the tournament’s top run scorer. The left hander again batted well, ending the innings 20 not out. Catherwood was running out of partners largely due to a brilliant bowling spell from Mercy Tomai, who finished with figures of 4-17. In reply there was always going to be a need for early wickets, but openers Adyhana Urika-Filifilia and Elizabeth Lavea set a good base. A victory was looking certain for Viscount until a late flurry of wickets. Viscount were 78-2, then Emma Downey and Abby Holdaway got hold of the ball. Five wickets were picked up between them. However, the Auckland school held on to hit the winning runs in the thirteenth over.

Heaton Normal Intermediate 133-5 (L Murray 51, G Edge 31) beat Tauranga Normal Intermediate 79-9 (L Bradley 2-16)

Heaton were looking to make it two on the trot when they came up against Tauranga Intermediate. Heaton were sent in and set a very strong total of 133-5 off their 20 overs. The innings was led by Lucy Murray, who hit 51 off just 61 balls. Murray also had support from captain Georgia Edge, who managed 31 before being caught and bowled by her opposing captain Emma Bettelheim. In reply, Tauranga’s innings never really got started. Georgia Edge would have been pleased with all her bowlers, with nearly every bowler picking up a wicket. Extras are going to play a big role in this tournament and Heaton have had very low numbers in their first two games. Tauranga fell 54 runs short of their Canterbury opponents.

Weston Primary 136-7 (R Cunningham 35, A Apperley 3-17, S Hartley 2-18) beat Havelock North Intermediate 125-7 (T Nettingham 20, A Petrie 3-12, E Carter 2-27)

Weston Primary School batted first against Havelock North and played very positively. Weston’s opening partnership between Alice Petrie and River Cunningham set a great platform for the innings. The partnership was finally broken when Natalya Nicholson bowled Petrie, which brought the score to 60-1. Cunningham top scored for Weston with 35, while the pick of the bowlers was Aniela Apperley who grabbed three scalps. Havelock North did not begin their chase well. There was a fightback with Tessa Nettingham scoring 20, while Natalya Nicholson hit an unbeaten 22*. Havelock North eventually fell 11 runs short, largely due to some great bowling from Alice Petrie. She ended with figures of 3-12, while Elisha Carter also picked up two wickets.

Round One

Havelock North Intermediate 82 all out of 17.5 overs (G Edge 4-10, N McKenzie 2-19) lost to Heaton Normal Intermediate 83-2 off 14.1 overs (G Edge 24*)
The National Primary School Shield began with Havelock North facing off against Heaton Normal. Havelock North won the toss and decided to bat but things didn’t begin well for Central Districts school, losing a number of wickets early in the innings. There were a few brief cameos from Aniela Apperley, Natalya Nicholson and Aimee Grey, which helped Havelock North get to 82. Captain Georgia Edge was excellent with the ball, picking up four wickets. Heaton, who are looking to make it two shield victories in a row, began their chase well. Joey Hull opened the innings with 19, before Georgia Edge hit an unbeaten 24*. Heaton reaching the target in the 15th over.

Viscount Primary School 132-6 (T Taupau 48*, V Paasi 21, E Pilbrow 3-12) beat Tauranga Normal Intermediate 119-8 (M Tomai 2-7)

Auckland’s Viscount Primary School began the tournament in fine fashion. After being sent into bat, Viscount opener Tame Taupau batted right through the innings, ending on 48*.  Valini Paasi also batted well, reaching 21 before being bowled by Tauranga’s captain Emma Bettelheim. Emily Pilbrow was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3-12 off her four overs. Tauranga’s chase never got the momentum it needed to chase down Viscount’s 13, with small cameos from Emma Bettelheim and Paige Haeata Burrows the highlights of the innings. Viscount’s attack all bowled well, with nearly every bowler picking up a wicket. Tauranga ended their innings 13 runs short of their opponents.

Weston Primary School 169-6 (M Loe 40*, R Cunningham 26, J Catherwood 2-13) beat Raroa Normal Intermediate 133-5 off 20 overs (J Catherwood 71*, B Milmine 2-23)

It was Otago v Wellington in the final game of the first round as, Weston Primary came up against Raroa Normal. Weston were sent in and put on a big total. Wicket keeper River Cunningham hit 26, while the performance of the innings came from captain Molly Loe. After coming in during the first over, she remained until the end of the innings with a 50 ball 40. While for Raroa, there could be a future star in the name of Jemma Catherwood. Not only did Catherwood keep for her team, she then passed the gloves over and picked up two wickets for 13 runs. She then batted at number three, and hit an unbeaten 71* off just 52 balls. Her performance clearly turned some heads, but it wasn’t enough as Weston ended 36 runs ahead of Raroa.
