Martin on target as Canterbury beat Wellington

Chris Martin backed up the great work of the batsmen to help Canterbury demolish the Wellington Firebirds by 140 runs in the One-Day match at the Basin Reserve.

The 35 year old international bowled with pace and accuracy as he took figures of four for 25.

Pursuing Canterbury's imposing 279 for seven, the home team were dismissed for 139 in just 36.1 overs after finding themselves in immediate disarray as Martin  ripped the top off their innings, having Cameron Merchant and Matthew Bell back in the hut after 2.2 overs.

The only resistance came from number four batsman James Franklin and number six Luke Woodcock who both managed 28.

Earlier, Canterbury set a sizable total after a series of handy contributions.

The top order did their job, with Michael Papps hitting 29, Peter Fulton 51, Johannes Myburgh 24 and Shanan Stewart 43 to set up a late onslaught from Kruger van Wyk, Chris Harris and Corey Anderson.

Anderson lead the way with a blistering unbeaten 52 from 29 deliveries, including eight fours and a six.  He now sits on top of the One-Day MVP table.

Van Wyk made 34 from 37 before Harris, along with Anderson, finished the innings off with 18 from 15.

The pick of the Firebirds attack was Iain O’Brien who took two for 45.
