The Canterbury Magicians have proved too good yet again as they beat the Northern Spirit by six wickets in the Action Cricket Cup.
The Spirit were put in to bat first by Canterbury and were looking in a stable position at 101 for 3. Natalie Dodd was solid for Northern, but needed to watch her strike rate as her 41 came off 117 balls.
Ever consistent number four Nicola Browne once again helped out the Spirit with a valuable 68 from 77 deliveries.
However Morna Nielsen (19) was the only other player to make any real contribution for Northern as her side had to settle for a mediocre total of 192 for eight.
Rachel Candy backed up her impressive performance yesterday with another fine bowling display as she collected figures of three for 29 from ten overs.
When Northern came out to bowl they knew how important it was to see the back of the top three early, but couldn’t bring this to fruition as the Magicians’ top order fired again.
Frances Mackay and Mandie Godliman put on 57 for the first wicket to set up what would be a frustrating time in the field for their opposition.
Mackay’s dismissal brought Captain Amy Satterthwaite to the middle and the experienced head continued her fine form. Both her (53) and Godliman (50) brought up half centuries to put the home team well and truly on the front foot.
Both were dismissed in quick succession, but the game was already out of reach for Northern as Canterbury secured another win with six wickets and 15 balls to spare.
Nielsen gave everything with the ball, but even her figures of two for 33 from 10 couldn’t stop Canterbury.
