Mackay century leads Magicians

Frances Mackay scored a fantastic century to lead the Canterbury Magicians to a 79 run victory over the Northern Spirit at Cobham Oval, Whangarei.

The Magicians made 266 for six in their 50 overs, before dismissing the Spirit for 187 off 48.1 overs.

The pursuit was based around a strong performance from the Spirit middle-order, with Kerry-Anne Tomlinson leading the way.

The number five top-scored with 47 and was aided by Natalie Dodd (34), Naomi Stalenberg (35) and Morna Nielsen, but to really challenge for the points someone needed to go on to make 80 plus.

They were restricted by a good team effort with the ball from the Magicians, with no-one truly standing out but everyone playing their part.

They had held the advantage of defending a substantial score thanks to a marvellous 120 from Frances Mackay earlier on.

The 22 year-old was simply outstanding in an innings which lasted 134 balls and was highlighted by 15 fours and a six. It was a special display and her team mates backed her up well.

Opener Meg Kendal continued her good from with 53, while captain Amy Satterthwaite and Janet Brehaut chimed in with scores of 21 and 19 respectively.

A late flurry of wickets stemmed the run flow a little, but the damage had already been done.

Brooke Kirkbride was the best of the Northern bowlers and finished with figures of two for 38 from ten overs.
