Wellington Blaze won on a thrilling last ball to keep the Central Hinds joyless in round six of the One-Day Competition — the clutch finish also keeping themselves in third place and just one point behind the Auckland Hearts on the ladder.
Needing two runs off Michelle McKay's last ball, Wheturangi Charteris went all out and blasted a six as the Blaze overcame the Hinds' 229/8 in Lincoln.
In an absorbing weekend at Lincoln full of nailbiters, Blaze had needed 10 off the over, and the pressure had only intensified after just three collected off the first three balls. However, a two, a single and a couple of wides ensured they would still have a fair chance off the last ball, just one needed to at least tie.
Charteris finished with a big 15 from six balls to scenes of jubilation from her teammates.

Earlier, Fran Wilson had top-scored with 73 through the middle of the innings, the Blaze having been anchored by young opener Amelia Kerr with 55, which had been a significant recovery after having been 10/2 after 3.2 overs.

Jess Watkin was the most successful of the Hinds' attack with 3-45 as they made a strong attempt to defend their tally of 224 for seven — an innings that had featured 77 runs from Watkin in an impressive double, and 75 from their experienced keeper-batsman Kelly Rangi.
The Hinds must have been left wondering just what they have to do to get a win in the competition this season: their next opportunity on 3 January at Hagley Oval will be no easier against the strong, unbeaten Canterbury Magicians, who now lead the second-placed Hearts by a healthy nine points on the table.
