Heartbreaker as White Ferns go down by four runs

The White Ferns have suffered a last over, four run loss in the final ODI against the West Indies Women, in St Kitts.

Suzie Bates (68) and Rachel Priest (74) had been chasing down the West Indies' 214-8 comfortably but the home team came back with quick wickets at the end of the innings to seal the match with just two balls to spare.

The White Ferns won the toss and elected to bowl after a delayed start due to overnight rain. West Indies Women were able to form solid partnerships, starting with openers Kycia Knight (39) and Natasha McLean (36).

Georgia Guy made the breakthrough, having McLean caught by Maddy Green, before Stafanie Taylor came in to continue the momentum, scoring 66 from 84 balls before Green and Guy combined again to end her innings.

The White Ferns' bowlers slowly pegged the home team back, with Morna Nielsen collecting 2-27 from her ten overs, while Guy finished with fine figures of 3-23. Shanel Daley’s cameo of 29 from 39 balls lifted her side to 214-8 in the 50 overs.

In reply, Suzie Bates and Rachel Priest made 114 for the first wicket; Bates playing the aggressor with 68 from 75 (including eight fours and a six) before being caught by Deandra Dottin from Anisa Mohammed's bowling.

Priest anchored the innings while Sophie Devine, who made 31 from 37, looked to maintain the high tempo. There were some quick wickets toward the end of the chase to ramp up the tension with Katie Perkins, Sarah McGlashan, Samantha Curtis and Maddy Green all going cheaply.

Priest departed in the 49th over for 74 – at which stage the White Ferns needed seven runs to win off the last six balls. However, Shakera Selman bowled Holly Huddleston from the third to last ball of the innings to give the West Indies Women the win by four runs.

The West Indies Women have won the ODI series 4-0. The White Ferns next play a T20 match against West Indies Women in Kingstown, at 6am NZ time Tuesday 23 September.
