Brad Haddin’s 110 led Australia to a seven wicket win in the third One-Day International of the National Bank Chappell/Hadlee series against the BLACKCAPS, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead in the five match series.
Haddin’s composed knock helped Australia reach 248 for four in 47.2 overs after the BLACKCAPS were rolled for 245 in 46.2 despite a superb half century from Ross Taylor.
Haddin lashed seven boundaries and five sixes off 121 deliveries and reached his second one-day century. He took a particular liking to Michael Mason’s bowling, taking 20 off his first over and getting 41 of his runs from the BLACKCAPS seamer.
The Australian wicketkeeper batsman shared second wicket partnership of 151 with captain Ricky Ponting who was the other main contributor with 69.
Michael Hussey went for nine before Cameron White (25*) and Adam Voges (13) knocked off the remaining runs.
Daniel Vettori was respected by the Australians, finishing with one for 36 with Tim Southee also tidy, taking one for 43.
Batting first after losing the toss, the BLACKCAPS got off to a brisk start but every time they looked like getting on top another wicket would fall.
Peter Ingram when cheaply before Brendon McCullum (23), Martin Guptill (21) and Neil Broom (24) fell in the twenties.
There was a familiar feeling to the innings. Like Auckland, the BLACKCAPS were gifting wickets too regularly to construct the 300 plus innings deemed necessary on a good Seddon Park wicket.
Taylor was the best of the line up with 62 but will be disappointed with himself after holing out when he looked in complete control
Cue another Scott Styris cameo. The experienced right-hand batsman combined with Gareth Hopkins in a much-needed partnership of 67. He eventually fell for 41. Hopkins followed for 45.
There were to be no heroics from the tail today. Daniel Vettori was run out for 0 after facing just 2 balls, effectively ending the BLACKCAPS chance of a decent total
Vettori acknowledged that more was needed from the top order, “when we consistently lost wickets there was too much work for the likes of Scotty (Styris) and Gareth (Hopkins) near the end.
“We paid the price for it in the latter stage of the innings when we had to be aggressive but didn’t have enough wickets in hand,” he added.
Front line quicks Ryan Harris and Mitchell Johnson snared three apiece and went for just 48 and 41 respectively. All rounder Shane Watson chimed in with two including the prize wicket of Taylor.
Injury update
BLACKCAPS fast bowler Shane Bond left the field after the ball hit his thumb when attempting a return catch. When questioned about Bond’s injury, Vettori said, “he walked off the field pretty confident that he would be alright for the next one in Auckland.”
When referring to Daryl Tuffey he added, “If we really had pushed him he could have played today but his calf is a little bit tender so I hoping there is 15 guys, Franklin included, that are available.”
