Firebirds cruise to victory

The State Northern Knights have been kept winless this season after losing to the State Wellington Firebirds by seven wickets in their final State Twenty20 match at Blake Park in Mt Maunganui.

The Knights won the toss and got of to a solid start with wicket-keeper Peter McGlashan opening the batting and clubbing 30 off 20.

Anton Devcich also made 30 but that was about it for the Knights who crumbled to be 110 all out in the nineteenth over.

Firebirds all-rounder Graham Napier was outstanding taking two for nine off 3.5 including a maiden over.

Mark Houghton was also on target taking three for 38 with Jeetan Patel and Luke Woodcock chiming in with two apiece.

The Firebirds cruised past the target after only 16.3 overs with captain Stephen Fleming leading the way to 46 not out.

There were useful contributions from all-rounders Graham Napier (20) and James Franklin (27).  Napier is first and Franklin fourth in the overall State MVP rankings.

The win puts the Wellington Firebirds in outright fourth at the end of the competition with the Northern Knights at the bottom of the table.
