Central continued their strong start to their Under-19 campaign, recording a six wicket win over Wellington in their nearest neighbour’s One Day match at Karori Park, Wellington.
Wellington would have been disappointed to have been dismissed for 167 after 45.3 overs and paid the price as Central cruised to a comfortable victory after 38.1 overs.
The pursuit was headed by Henry Collier, who played a calm and collective innings with 70 from 108 balls. His 11 fours and one six took his side through to 141 for two, before being dismissed in the 35th over.
His departure had little effect on the result of the game though, with Byrnn Cleaver seeing Central to victory with an unbeaten 30 from 70 balls to secure the points.
Earlier, Wellington had been in good shape at 75 for one after 17 overs. Cam Hawkins and Sam Keegan were going along nicely, but Keegan’s dismissal for 38 started a downward spiral as his side began to lose regular wickets.
Matters went from bad to worse in the 28th over, with Hawkins run-out for a top score of 47. It was a disappointing way to go and a big blow to Wellington’s chances.
The tail failed to produce anything of note and with four and half overs remaining their innings came to a close as they were bowled out.
All-rounder Angus Schaw was the pick of the bowlers, snaring three wickets in his ten overs for 22. Central now head into the tournament at Lincoln with a handy head start.
