Cricketing Q+A with Judith Collins, MP
What’s your earliest cricketing memory?
I remember playing backyard cricket with my brother when I was about five. He was 20. He told me to stand at the wickets and he’d bowl. I can’t remember if he used a cricket ball or a tennis ball. I just know that I learnt to play with a straight bat.
What’s your preferred format of the game, Test, one-day or twenty20?
Even though I am fully aware that I should say Tests, I prefer one day cricket. I’ll get a result.
How do you keep in touch with the state of play during a match? And, has Twitter enhanced your cricket enjoyment overall?
I keep my eye on the scoreboard, listen to the commentators and see what crickets fans are saying on Twitter. Twitter is an excellent way to keep in touch with the Team and the fans.
How often do you get the chance to get along and see a match live?
Hardly ever but would like to do more spectating.
Are there any other MPs who are cricket nuts?
I remember the Prime Minister, after a little coaching, hitting Shane Warne around the park to raise money for Christchurch.
Who is your all-time most admired BLACKCAP or White Fern?
It would have to be Sir Richard Hadlee. Anyone who takes 9-52 against Australia and catches the 10th wicket (which denied him getting every wicket in the innings) has to be an all-time great. Obviously the Queen agrees as well.
I’m also quite fond of Ross Taylor now that he’s doing so well.
If you could change one rule in cricket, what would it be?
LBWs can be a bit confusing.
